Innovative Community-Based Health Insurance Solutions: A Decade of Impact
Introduction
Since 2009, Afya Yetu Initiative (AYI) has been pioneering community-based health insurance (CBHI) solutions to enhance healthcare accessibility for low-income and informal sector workers. This article highlights AYI’s journey and its impact on health insurance coverage, especially in the context of evolving healthcare policies in Kenya.
Achievements of CBHI Project
Extensive Network Creation: AYI established 105 sub-locational CBHI schemes and 3 county-level networks (Nyeri, Murang’a, and Kirinyaga). These initiatives provided coverage to over 200,000 beneficiaries, demonstrating the effectiveness of low-cost micro-insurance strategies.
Complementary Coverage: CBHI schemes offer a localized and affordable alternative to the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), catering to vulnerable households often excluded from mainstream insurance. This model supports Kenya’s goal of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
Community Trust and Recognition
AYI’s approach, which involves community leaders in governance and management, has fostered trust and increased local ownership. The Micro Insurance Learning and Knowledge Centre (MILK) recognized AYI’s products for delivering the highest client value among insurance products in Kenya in 2013 ([Micro Insurance Centre](http://www.microinsurancecentre.org)).
Key Benefits of CBHI:
1. Financial Relief: Reduces healthcare costs for low-income individuals.
2. Improved Health Outcomes: Encourages proactive health-seeking behavior.
3. Sustainable Model: Validates low-cost micro-insurance strategies.
Conclusion
AYI’s CBHI project exemplifies how community-based solutions can effectively address healthcare needs. By complementing existing health coverage options and fostering community involvement, AYI continues to make strides towards achieving Universal Health Coverage in Kenya.
